Floor lamps are a very simple way to add style and elegance to any room. A floor lamp is very mobile and can be moved around the house to suit the users needs while still adding that great element of elegance. As one can find floor lamps of all different shapes, sizes and colors they are a very popular item in the home decor industry and the latest trend has been antique floor lamps. These lamps are ornately designed, only cast a soft glow over the room and made out of brass while or some other type of metal. An antique lamp will surely add class and elegance to any style of room.
The brightest lamp that you can purchase today in any store was designed and made circa 1920. It is also the most versatile lamp that you can buy anywhere. Further it will outlast most any modern lamp that you can find at any price. This antique floor lamp is known by a numerous names such as: 6 Way Floor Lamp, Reflector Floor Lamp, and "JUNIOR". The design begins with a heavy metal base sometimes highly decorated with an upright tubing leading up to a central electrical socket surrounded by 3 arm lights (4 lights total). The central light takes a 3 way bulb (low-medium-high) that is often a MOGUL size which is larger than a standard socket with higher wattage (100-200-300 watts). The three arm lights are controlled by a switch that can turn on separately just 1, 2 or all 3 of the arm lights. Further, many of these JUNIORS had a small light under the base which provided a very subtle night time floor light operated by a foot switch mounted on the side of the base. As if this were not enough, the central top socket is encased in a large metal cup which holds a white waffle patterned glass bowl that reflects light upward to bounce of the ceiling. A fabric or silk shade (also called JUNIOR shade) rests upon the glass reflector bowl to reflect light downward for reading. A single arm light can provide a simple night light or at it brightest setting, it can light up an entire room. There is no brighter lamp or more versatile lamp available anywhere today and it was designed and made nearly 100 years ago!
Knowing the goal of the lighting, determines where and just how you put it and perhaps just how much you pay to buy. Do you really need light in a corner for accent, then think of a more ornate, colorful shade? Do you want a soft light is a baby`s room or soft light in a conversational sitting area, then consider a torchiere style with the shade turned upward. Needless to say, for reading, go for a floor lamp that allows two to three light bulbs with a shade turned down. Remember the room balance in all of this. You can use the placement to balance the area for those who have other tall large furniture pieces on an opposite wall.
The Room In Which The Floor Lamp Will Be Placed. One of the first things you will need to consider when purchasing a contemporary lamp is the room in which the lamp will be placed. Obviously, your choice for a child`s playroom lamp will different from the lamp you choose for your modern living room, or your formal dining room. The decor of the rooms you use contemporary ones will in some ways limit your choice of the lamps you choose. A chrome and glass lamp will look out of place in a Victorian living or bedroom. So make sure that the lamp you choose fits the room in which it will be placed.
