If you do have small end tables that are open, you may want to consider adding a contrasting linen or lace piece to the top and even have it extend over and down the sides some. This will give your table a bit more bulk without taking up added space. For really small homes, you can eliminate one of the end tables entirely. While it`s nice to have end tables on both ends for convenience and balance, there is no hard and fast rule requiring this. You may be able to make due with a single table and perhaps add a floor lamp on the other side to add light and even things out visually.
An end table is intended to make it easy for people sitting in an armchair to reach their drinks, nibbles or books and newspapers without having to bend down over the side of their chair to do so. The same with a coffee table - it should be set at a comfortable height. Your first priority should therefore be the dimensions of your coffee and end tables. A coffee table should ideally be at just above knee height. Your end tables should be level with the arm of the chair or sofa. This will enable you to each to the side and pick up a drink with very little effort. Too high or too low, and it is more easy to spill even to drop your cup or glass.
The same is certainly true of end tables. While wood tables have been traditional favorites in American homes for centuries, metal end tables will give your home an entirely different look. Where wood tables add warmth, metal tables can either lend an air of sophistication or even a bit of energy to the room, depending on the type of metal you select and the design of the table itself.
In some cases, you can purchase such tables to match your existing furniture, or if completely renewing your living room furniture they can be included in a collection. In the latter case your choice is simple, but what if not? What if you are looking for a coffee table or end table that is not part of a set, but you feel you need one or both to make your living room look complete? Here are some tips.
