Dimensions of Occasional Tables. It is open to debate which is the more important: the look and feel of your occasional tables or their dimensions. Perhaps dimensions are irrelevant if you find a superb coffee table that matches your furniture perfectly. Maybe that superb-looking end table is ideal for your sofa or armchairs. Forget their sizes - they look great so let`s buy them! Is that so? First you must consider the purpose of these occasional tables, for that is what they are generally known as - occasional tables - tables that will be used on occasion, or at least that is one explanation for their name. What if the end table is way below the height of the arm of your armchair? Would you feel comfortable stretching down to get a cup or glass?
It`s amazing how a little thing like the material used to make a piece of furniture can change its entire character. This is certainly true with upholstered furnishings. The difference between a fabric sofa and one made of fine leather is like night and day. It`s not that one is inferior to the other. Rather, it creates a different look to a room, all because a certain material was chosen.
As far as the coffee and end table sets themselves, you need to pay particular attention to the size of the pieces. These sets come in all sizes and shapes and you want to make sure that the ones you fall in love with don`t overwhelm the room or look Lilliputian next to your mammoth sectional. Beyond style and size, you really want to think about features. While you wouldn`t ordinarily think about a piece of furniture as having desirable features, coffee and end table sets can have an endless array.
If you do have small end tables that are open, you may want to consider adding a contrasting linen or lace piece to the top and even have it extend over and down the sides some. This will give your table a bit more bulk without taking up added space. For really small homes, you can eliminate one of the end tables entirely. While it`s nice to have end tables on both ends for convenience and balance, there is no hard and fast rule requiring this. You may be able to make due with a single table and perhaps add a floor lamp on the other side to add light and even things out visually.
